Here is the rub, if you want the extra items (you dont need them at all) that people that paid for the game get on VERY random drops, then you have to get them via microtransactions.
Thats it. You do not need the extra items.

Both free to play and own. You can buy items but they are not needed and are almost all novelty.

Well there is the special spy cloaking device that recharges when you stand still even while on. That one is pretty sweet.
