The girlfriend LOVES it.  It lives on the coffee table or next to the bed.  She uses it for internet surfing, looking up recipes, games, e-reader, whatever.  It's not everything I'd personally want in a device, but it wasn't for me.  Besides, I have the htpc for my l33t h4xx1ng.  So we all win.  If you don't like/need it, don't buy it.  If it fits your needs, it's a great gadget and I recommend it.

If I wanted a tablet to use as a laptop replacement, I'd hold out for the HP Slate.  It promises to be pretty badass.

But do you promise to be bad ass JT? DO YOU?!

Yeah, I sort of wish I had a use for one of these devices, but I'd just be buying it to screw around with. It would mostly be an e-reader with extra funsies.

The e-reader isn't all that. Get a Kindle when you learn to read

My brother got his iPad 3G other day. I had fun waking up and browsing the internet on it. He has the extra cash so see why he got it, if I had the extra it is a fun device to explore the internets as well as doing routine tasks. His plan is to also use it on trips to upload photos, etc with 3G. Most comment thing everyone says is how heavy it is, which continues to take it out of the "ebook reader" category. If you want an ebook reader still have to go with kindle or nook, or whatever else is e-ink these days. If you want a netbook/tablet that might also let you read a book or other random crap ipad works.

How heavy is it?  It didn't seem like it would be that much heavier than a netbook or something like that.

edit: ok did some googling, cnet says its 1.5 pounds (though the 3g version could be heavier).  I guess perhaps considering how thin it is people would expect it to be lighter.

Yeah that is mostly the issue, everyone expects it to be as light as a kindleDX. But the glass and huge battery bump it up. I can see where those talking about laying by the pool "trying" to hold one up for 45 minutes to read would be quite a strain.

If you can't support 1.5 pounds on your lap, you're kind of a faggot.  It's not heavy at all and anyone who complains about the weight is really searching for something to gripe about.  Grow up America.

I don't think many men have complained, but there does exist another sex in the world called women that don't have fit arms, that is probably why the point is being made because it probably isn't comfortable for them to use the device reading long periods.

Small weight can become very heavy over long periods of holding out away from body. Best example I can think of is if your cell phone had double its weight would you care? Sure it still light as "shit", but if you talk on the phone holding it to your ear for 45 minutes+ it might cause you to change hands (and people would complain because it isn't "comfortable"). The reason I said double its weight is because basically the iPad is double the weight of a book or kindle.

I am thinking about getting a 3G ipad and dump my 3G iphone. I only used 40 minutes of my talk time last month.

What phone would you get instead?  You know the ipad's 3g chip is only for data, not voice, right?
