Title: Quitting Smoking / Help
Post by: Amule on March 25, 2008, 08:21:56 PM
So, I have been smoking for 6 years and I'm thinking maybe now is the time to quit. Don't ask me why. I love Phillip Morris with all my heart and soul.

I think that WoW is going to be a helpful agent in my crusade to kick the habit, but I was wondering if any of you guys have successfully quit.

How did you do it?

and the patch.

I have since relapsed but for the first 3 months after I read that book the thought of smoking made me want to puke.  I had smoked 2 packs a day up to that point.  My Ex GF quit just by reading that book and went from a pack a day to nothing, and has stuck with it (at least the last time I saw her, when we split)

Also there is a laser acupuncture that is supposed to work wonders now to, I have a  friend that went from a smoker to wanting to puke at the smell in the coarse of an hour's treatment.

i quite after almost 25 years ( yes i do know that im old )  I think i quite 4 or five time befor it stuck  ( 4 yrs now )  the biggest thing is you have to want to do it.   after 4 yrs i still pass by someone whos smokin and i think it smell good but i know that one will start up my pack a day habbit.    Its all a mind game your body  is  done with nicote withdraws 48 hours after you quite if im not mistaken.  so where you choose gum , the patch  or whatever you have to be ready .

Well I got a g/f  ... guess you could try that? Kithari you watch your damn mouth!

But honestly, my dad was a heavy smoker and he's tried for the longest time to quit. He finally found success with the patches/gum. The hardest thing he said, was just getting out of the routine. Waking up and having a smoke, or just having one after a meal. Find something to distract yourself while the nicotine fix wears off. Play some WoW when you get the itch or something. My dad started doing woodworking as a hobby to distract himself.

And he's been working my wood ever since.

Arctic is dead on. That is the only way you will kick it, you have to really really want to quit and not be half hearted about it.
I found it useful to chew on a straw or a toothpick when it got bad.

My folks smoked for almost 40 years and finally quit after trying a ton of times.  They used Chantix.  Not sure if you want to avoid that kind of thing or not, but hey.  It worked for them when the gum, patches, cold turkey and a lot of other things failed.  They've been done with cigarettes for about half a year now and are going strong.  Longest they'd "quit" before was a few months for my dad and 9 months for my mom.

It helps not to hang around smokers.  If you hang around non-smokers exclusively, you won't want to smoke socially.

What makes it easy, is having the attitude shift about smoking - like Arctic said.  You have to really want to quit.. .and you have to change your thoughts about it.  That's what helped me most.  And I quit cold turkey from a 2+ pack a day habit.  Now I can't even stand the smell of it.

I quit cold turkey a year and a half ago, and I do hang around witha lot of smokers in the Army. However, you do have to want to quit for it to stick. Luckily I never did get up to a full pack a day when I did smoke, but some days I got close, especially on field training exercises. You just gotta find something else for you to do. Sunflower seeds helped.

Wow! I didn't know that you had been smoking, Bry.  Grats on kicking it.  :D  Now I'm the only one of us 3 kids that hasn't been a smoker. I suppose that I have my own addictions, though. :P

I'll have to second the Chantix idea (and not just b/c it helped the in-laws quit).  I've been working in pharmacy now for >2 years, and it really seems like the best way for people to quit. We've had so many success stories, especially with people that have been smoking for many many years.  But you still have to want to quit and work at it - it isn't a magic bullet.  My uncle didn't go the full course on the Chantix, and he never quit smoking things other than nicotine.  ;) Chantix helped him quit cigarettes for about a year, but he's back up to smoking as much as he was before.  He's going to try Chantix again, but he needs to be fully focused on quitting smoking everything (which, knowing him and my aunt, will be very difficult).

The main problem with Chantix, though, is it's price - it's still over $100/month and it can be tough to get some insurance companies to cover it.  I would think that the cost would be worth it though, both in the short (you won't be buying cigs) and long (your health will be much better) run.

Good luck!  Quitting smoking is one of the toughest things that you can do.

I blame learning Russian on my smoking habit. The funny thing is all of us smokers were the best speakers in the classes because we would all speak Russian at the Smoke Pits with people from other classes. Learning Pashto has made me want to start smoking again from time to time, but I've held strong, even though there is a smoker in my class.

Download a girlfriend like me (Which Farkas did), then wait for a patch to come out a year later (after you grow attached to your new girlfriend add-on) in which girlfriend patch forces you to quit smoking and uninstall all cravings for a smoke...

Lmao... so technical... XD

Thanks you guys. This is the first time I have seriously considered quitting smoking. But it's so difficult for me to even take the first step. Just reading your tips on how to quit makes me want to smoke! But I consider just letting the thought get into my head progress, so wish me luck!

GL to you.  I know a fair amount of people who have had all kinds of different health problems related to smoking.  I hope it works out for you!

ok  i downloaded a girl friend and didnt realise there was a patch but i did quit.
step 1. remove  any smokes ash trays lights that you may have "a real smoker will not trow away smokes so give them to a friend that smokes as long as that friend isnt going to be around for a couple of days"
step 2. get your self something for your hand  to do when u are walking up the street waiting for a bus  i used a yoyo.
step 3. play wow for 3 days straight if your not eating or sleeping play wow.
step 4. on the 4th day take your yoyo or what ever and go to where there are smokers if you havent had a smoke in the first hour you can go home and live a smoke free life
ps. you may want to keep the yoyo or what ever around for a while i stopped carrieing mine after about 2 months.
good luck

Whaaaaaaaaaat?  Why would you assume that I would make a comment here?  O:)

Dog biscuits worked for Riggs in Lethal Weapon 3 or 2 or 79... one of those.

Seriously though, good for you Amule.  I've heard that dropping smoking is one of the toughest things you can ever go through and I wish you the best of luck with it.  On the plus-side, with so many places going smoke-free these days, if you quit you won't have to go stand outside and freeze to death in the middle of winter so you can get your fix.

To be honest, you might go back to smoking a few times. When I quit, it was the third time that stuck.

LOL that reminded me of a joke...  here it is:

Good luck on kicking the habit Liz!  I hear the "Bodies" exhibit (http://www.bodiestheexhibition.com/) has a display of a life-long smoker's lungs next to a non-smoker's and it might be enough to help convince you.  I've never smoked, so I can't really say how hard it could/will be, but I'm sure with a little willpower and some help from your (non-smoking) friends you'll be fine.

I've never smoked a day in my life.  Grew up with a ton of guys that did, but never really had the desire.  That being said, one of my best friend's Patrick worked for a company that repaired and cleaned bronchial scopes.  He used to smoke about a pack to two packs a day.  One day he walks into the hospital he was picking up at and the doctor asks him to suit up and come in to one of the rooms so he can see what's wrong with the scope he is picking up.  He just thought he was going in to a clean room, not a patient room.  They were doing a scope of a guys lung who was in for lung disease due to smoking.  After he saw what this guys lungs looked like, he quit that day and never picked up another cig.

One of the biggest things you have to do is learn to hate it.  Train your mind to think about how disgusting it is, how your fingers stink, your clothes stink.  How much money will you save by not smoking?  Put that into a retirement calculator and I'll bet that at your young age, you would have over a million dollars in a retirement fund by the time your 50.  Aside from saving your own life, this is a good choice for everyone around you.  I wish you the best of luck with this and hope you conquer that nastiness.  Quite a few woman in my life I brok up with because of smoking.

Oh and this might help......

First step is always the hardest part.  Just crush whatevers left in your pack and toss it.  Believe me, it'll feel pretty good.  There was so many times in the 12 years I was smoking that I just kept telling myself "Alright, I'm gonna finish off this pack and then I'm done." And I'd finish the pack and just grab another.  Crush it, cut out smoking in your car and your apartment (if you smoke there) and anywhere close to where you work or live.  Make it hard to smoke and the natural laziness of humans will kick in and help you stop smoking.
I can't say I don't feem for one once in a while but each time I pass a point where I could smoke it gets easier.

If you lived in Aus, near my area, I'd be happy to also give you a tour of our autopsy rooms and wards... we get lovely nasties sometimes (Cancer hospital) - forget the warning labels on the cigarette packet, you need to see the real thing or hold a grotty lung that stinks of tar and fixing chemicals *goes green then returns to normal*

Lmao, keep us updated on how it's going ^.^

Think about all the will power it takes for you to forcibly ingest poison in to your lunges via something that is on fire.  If you have that much will power quitting should be a piece of cake.
