At this point I'm just happy te format war is over.  Too bad the worse of the two won, but as I said, Sony has more money than god and can buy a win.

Well it was a smart business move for Sony.  Being able to buy their way to victory mean alot more overall sales considering how available HD televisons have been becoming.  In addition, this should help sluggish PS3 sales as well, I've seen commercials where they are only marketing the fact that its a blu ray player.

I wont bet getting a blu-ray player or a PS3 anytime soon, if ever, though.  I'm happy with medium definition for the time being.

Upconverting ftw.

I'm totally skipping HD and Blu-Ray.

Media Center PC + Internal downloading service @ 11MB/s = win

Yeah the end is near for Toshiba. I wouldn't be too down on the Blu-Ray format though Troyer. I hear they are doing some very cool things over at sony to significantly enhance the HD DvD quality over Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. I think they just sat on the technology until they could control the basic HD format which makes sense on the business end. Anyhow, I came across this article today and I just wanted to know if anyone had heard similar reports.

This picture, while obviously photochopped, sums it up quite nicely.

To sum it up: Toshiba is no longer making HD DVD players and recorders.

Looks like Sony was able to buy their win completely.  That still doesn't change the fact that I won't be supporting blu-ray anytime soon.

Meh,

Companies have been flexing monetary muscle for years. Sony is not doing anything better or worse than what a lot of corporations across major industries have done. People can say they bought a win or stole a win, etc..., but the bottomline is that they conducted their business better and smarter. Sony stock is up because of this, their employess (several thousand) will enjoy greater job security, and consumers can finally purchase a better format without worrying that their investment will be obsolete in a few years. This is a win for not just Sony but for any electronics corporation involved in HD tech (even Toshiba). Prices on the blu-ray will fall now that it is the standard and most if not all DvD manufacturers (even Toshiba in the future) will be seeking to offer their version (offer of an identical product across many competitors almost always drives the price down creating a buyer market). Plus Blu-ray will be able to make a better move into the home computer market with its massive storage capability. I expect MicroSoft will be talking to Sony soon to buy rights. Also, before discounting Sony as a bully, consider that they were among the first electronics pioneers and have brought many innovations to the AV experience. They have been around longer and grown smarter through their victories and defeats. This is business, and Toshiba knew the cost before ever stepping to the table.

F Sony.

W3rd!

Since HD-DVD is now dead, some folks are asking Toshiba to release the  HD-DVD specs 'into the wild', hoping that  the existing drives might still have a useful life beyond ending up in a landfill.  You can find a link to the petition on Digg:
