Title: Infinity - Best MMO evar?
Post by: Nightstalker on December 17, 2010, 11:46:06 PM
Pretty fucking awesome. It's MMO genre not experienced before.

Essentially it's spaceship battle/exploration/mining etc, on epic immersion scale. Something akin to Xwing meets EVE, with a freeroam feel, and interaction with planets etc.

its mostly a twitch shooter, so character developement isn't so much a factor in regards to combat.

Now, what makes this game so fucking unique awesome is that it's planets are actually the size of a real planet, and that transition to a planet from space is seamless.

Its fucking incredible, see for yourselves in this transitional video:

Seems you can do alot of things in the way of exploration, mining missions, industry etc. which includes starting your own city on a planet, or experience combat in various size ships from fighters to battleships etc.

Kinda like SWG jump to lightspeed....only better.

Liked SWG...LOVED Jump to Lightspeed expansion.  Then realized that SWG sucked and JTLS wasnt enough to keep me in it.

Yeah I think that is a fair analysis, though the transitions through systems being different, and the scale much wider.

Heres some interesting Q/A on the faq

Can I own multiple ships ? A space station ? A city ? A planet... ?

Yes. You will actually be able to acquire any object in the game world. You will be able to hire non-player characters to control your ships and follow your orders. You will be able to move space stations and set the tax rates, acquire some buildings in a city, or if you're getting very rich, a whole planet.

How many solar systems are present in Infinity ?

A lot. Since they are generated procedurally on-the-fly, they cannot easily be counted. But we tried to respect realistic numbers. Expect a galaxy with up to hundreds of billions of worlds. You will not be able to visit them all in your whole lifetime, even if you were to spend only one second per world!

Will it be possible to have multiple players board on a same ship?

As a passenger, surely. In an active position, like one player controlling movements and other players on turrets, that's a possibility that we are seriously considering.

I know at preset you can tag along as a passenger pilot, such as in the use of being a fighter pilot aboard another player's carrier etc. so them considering to gun the players ship would be cool too.

And if I understand the FAQ correctly, it means you could have your own NPC fleet, which would be pretty damn cool to bring along in missions to kill pirates or such.

I think it would be cool for us to have control of a solar system, and field a fleet in such a manner.

Hmm, seems you can contribute some models and textures to the game. I might have to make a few ships

My biggest question would be is there a plot/back story?  Truly open ended games tend to get kind of tedious.  Can you take over other people cities?  Decimate their shipping fleet?  Certain paths you can take your city/ship down?
It's a pretty game but if the whole point is to explore then it could get old pretty fast.

Kas,
I really see this type of game developing its own story. Groups of "guilds" or races or whatever forming alliances, power struggels, political agendas, fighting over resources or important portions of the galaxy. Power.  It would kind of flesh itself out. If they are smart, the devs will foster this type of game.

At any rate, this looks cool.

For Kas and others too lazy to read, more on the FAQ:

What type of missions will be available ?

The list will be very long; most of the missions will be generated dynamically depending on the system you're in and what you've been doing. Trade, hunt, mine, escort, scientific research, rescue, political, tourism, spy missions, and a lot more. In addition, an in-game interface will be available to propose your own services to the other players, or to non-player characters.

Is the game focused on combat ?

The game is open-ended and is not focused on combat at all, although combat and action is certainly a possible (and viable) way to play. It may not be easy to play as a pirate, though, and players will be free to explore other domains (trading, mining, doing business, exploring unknown worlds, etc.. ).

Is there a storyline ? How important will it be in the game ?

Yes, there will be a storyline, and it will be pretty advanced for an online game. Players will be able to influence the plot or attend "unique" events. One of our developers is dedicated to the story development. To avoid spoiling the story, nothing more can be said, except that the central plot will revolve around a mysterious planet, Earth.

So basically it sounds like the jist of it is modelled after an EVE theme, in that you can do missions tied to a main core plot, revolving around Earth, which would advance a storyline.

Apart from that you would have repeatable or maybe random gen missions to do, given by space stations or cities, which would be varying in categories I would suspect you could choose, such as hauling items from planet to planet, or doing some mining or exploring, or perhaps killing some pirates etc.

All of which would give money, items or other prizes.

Or you could just devote your time to a profession, such as mining, where perhaps you would be flying around blasting and harvesting asteroids.. Or if it's anything like EVE in that regard, blow up someone else's mining ship, and take their haul and sell it :P

So it seems very open ended if you wish to partake in that, or you could devote yourself to chasing the storyline if that satisfies you as well.

I'll have you know I am just lazy enough to read!  Good, plot line is good.

See, there's this thing called PLEX, which you can buy with in-game money that extends your subscription by one month, per usage.

And obviously so long as you are active to earn money to pay for them, you play for free.

You could start a trial and never have to pay for anything ever, so long as you know what you are doing, and active enough to get the cash

So, nevermind the fact that it takes a lot of in game cash to buy the plex.
