I got an invite into the closed beta couple weeks before open beta started up. It works pretty well, the startup time is a little long to be considered "log on any public computer and play" (takes about 6-10 minutes depending on how fast it lets you download once plugin installed). It is Quake3 exactly, just it seems the people that never stopped playing retail moved to Quakelive are uber-insane good destroying everyone. But hey if you play it enough you can be as good as them.
