Its hard to say. First I understand Lucas's position because that is one huge trademark nightmare. Not only would the school need his name. They need his image, the Starwars rebel symbol, his voice, toys, etc (in case I forgot something). That is a pretty huge leap. If the school was just the "Rebel Alliance" then they could have guest mascots that would show up giving direct references, but the general image would be a vague person not specifically known. A lot less to license.
It is easy to put the blame all on Lucas, but I also wonder if the school really, really, ever considered it. Its one of those things similar to NASA and the "name the space capsule". Let the people vote then still overrule it if they pick the funny crazy idea out of spite.
