You can actually use any type of oil, i've seen this done with cooking oil and motor oil.

Yeah I saw a few with vegetable oil,  this one just looked like a pretty clean and easy set up. I've read up on it out of curiousity and I guess its a pretty viable and working solution for heating problems. I might scrounge around here and find some old parts and build it, just to do it.

Yeah, i have yet to see a better way to dissipate heat, the only major problems can be A) Leaks are a bitch to clean up and will eventually happen; B) when you need to repair something, it's all covered in oil.

I've thought about doing this at home, and still might if I can build a system worthy of the trouble.

The only thing that would worry me is something growing in the oil.   Sounds like it could get nasty.

yeah the leaks would be a problem, but if you used a fish tank and top loaded like the vid it prob wouldn't be an issue. and i read the veggie oil can get pretty nasty but the mineral oil is a lot cleaner, plus if you seal it up properly it stays that way. who who knows. if i can score the parts i'll try it out

I was going to use an acrylic case with silicone sealant to keep in the oil. It would be pretty leak proof. You would need to design a removable top though, so you wouldn't ever be able to leave it on it's side. Also, you couldn't use an internal CD/DVD ROM.

hmm we'll see the thank they suggested seemed pretty simple and they just cut a piece of plexiglass to fit the top of the tank. I'll do some more research. Yeah I think the HD and cd/dvd would have to be outside the tank... but we shall see.

Just throw an oil filter on it.
