Did any of you dirt merchants buy one?
If iTunes would accept AVI's and MKV's I would consider getting one. Just right now I cant see myself getting one. Maybe 2.0

Bought one for the ladyfriend. I sold my MacBook Pro recently and she's bitched ever since about not having a computer she can surf on while watching her celebrity dance/cooking shows. Also, she reads alot and wanted an e-reader. Pretty cool device, but the fact that it's basically a big iphone that you have to sync with another computer pretty much blows donky dicks.

yeah and FUCK the e-book bullshit on that. Jobs has made a few publishing jack up the fucking prices on those books. I'll protest by pirating books onto my kindle.
If they supported MKV and AVI's I would already have one

I dunno, I can see why people would like an easy to use tablet with easy to use apps that are mostly situational as an alternative to something like a laptop to carry around, but I can't help but to think that it would be better overall just to have a netbook.

MKV is a file container using AAC audio and h.264 video I believe (which apple loves). AVI is also a container sometimes using WMV which is compatible through flip4mac.That said it is kinda silly that it isn't recognizing the container formats, that takes seconds to program. The downside is that they run like shit and only MP4 is optimized thus why Apple uses that. So Apple would have to do the extra work to optimize it, so they kinda lazy here. It does work in VLC and other non-iTunes media players. However, that does mean you are correct in that the videos won't run on other itunes syncing hardware. Run into the same problems on the xbox 360 and PS3 both hitting formats they can't eat.
All companies force crap on you, it all depends how many third-party developers there are to make up for their crap. In Microsoft and Apple's case Microsoft has a lot more people writing software, so there is more options on formats. That said, I don't really see a use for the iPad beyond having the ability to browse the internet in bed. With my head against a pillow and laptop on my chest it isn't the most comfortable way to check up on the internets before bed, the ipad would be welcome there. Besides that wouldn't have much use for it beyond if I owned an iPhone, which I don't. I also care less about Flash, but that is for another thread.

ZONK...WTF
THE CRAPPER!!!! Thats what the iPad is designed for!
I streamed my MKV's and stuff that the 360 didnt play natively thru PS3mediaserver to the 360. Worked like a champ. Then I got that Samsung player and it plays everything Ive thrown at it perfectly. Including the 22gb Bluray rip of Saving Private Ryan.

Yeah I haven't used Medialink to transcode the files that it doesn't natively support, but I have streamed with Medialink before, that and 360connect are great programs.
